Joint Degree Sustainable Development

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The master’s programme Sustainable Development is offered as part of a Joint Degree Programme in cooperation with the following international universities: Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Italy), University of Leipzig (Germany) and Utrecht University (Netherlands). The range of courses is broad, interdisciplinary, cross-academic and cross-national. This programme provides knowledge and skills that enable students to contribute to the development of a responsible environmental attitude (sustainable development). Students learn to assess the important impact of national and international economic and social developments against the backdrop of pressures on the environment. Contributions to more sustainable development include measures such as recycling materials, a responsible handling of natural resources and raising awareness for social responsibility in companies. In a basic module, students acquire basic knowledge and skills with regard to key working methods of sustainable development, which are strongly interdisciplinary. They are thus able to understand dynamics, complexity and interaction between natural, social and economic processes and systems. Students may specialise in restricted elective courses ranging from sustainable urban and regional development, global processes, technologies relating to sustainable development and administration to responsible management of natural resources and social and political dimensions of sustainability. Students are required to complete a semester abroad, choosing a partner university that suits their specialisation.

Expected results

Graduates of the master’s programme Sustainable Development will be able to deal with questions related to sustainable development including interdisciplinary aspects. They will thus be able to contribute to shifting society towards sustainability. They will have acquired social competences (teamwork, conflict management, project management) in addition to their specialist qualifications.
